Contents
Due to globalization, many security issues more than ever have ceased to be just local or regional, but have instead become of global importance. At the same time global security developments regularly have impacts on the regional and local level. The global scale of security, however, does not at all mean that local and regional particularities are of no relevance. The opposite is true. In our seminar “Salient Security Issues in Extra European Regions” therefore we want to examine phenomena that are one the one hand particularly representative for their region, but on the other hand show global relevance as well. Thus our journey to a whole variety of security issues will take us from the polar region to the equator and from the Americas to Asia and the Middle East. After a general introductory part on how to analyze security issues, we will first deal with climate change, energy security and resource conflicts in the Arctic. Then we will approach maritime territorial conflicts in Asian waters as well as the security implications of China and India both being about to attain superpower status. In the African context we will approach state failure and piracy as well as the topic of land grabbing and food security. With respect to the Middle East, we will address selected aspects of the challenges posed by the so called Arab Spring. Furthermore we will take a closer look on Iran’s developments in the field of military and security forces. Last but not least we will cope with human and national security in Latin America as well as the issue of policing increasingly dangerous cities.
In addition to dealing with interesting empirical topics, the seminar will focus as well on the theoretical and methodological access to explain these empirical phenomena. An important part of the seminar thus is the development of an individual research design to answer a specifically developed research question. According to the size of the seminar, group work or individual research approaches will be emphasized.
