Inhalt
This seminar provides a comprehensive introduction to the European Union (EU) and the process of European integration. Its guiding questions are: What have been the driving forces of the integration process? How does the political system of today’s EU work?
In answering those questions, the first section of the seminar traces the evolution of the European integration process from the late 1940s onward. In addition to examining landmark decisions and events the course introduces key theoretical concepts that seek to explain why and how the integration process has unfolded over time. The second section examines the political system of the EU (based on the Treaty of Lisbon). Here, the composition and core functions of major EU institutions are discussed, including the European Commission, the European Council, and the European Parliament. The final section focuses on a number of policy areas in which the EU is involved.

The course’s major learning objective is to prepare students for advanced classes on the subject of the EU by providing them with a thorough knowledge of the process and outcome of European integration.
