This course introduces students to the software industry in general and Free, Libre, and Open Source Software (FLOSS) in particular.

The course has two parts: a first part on the software industry and a second part on FLOSS and how it is changing the software industry. Each part requires 2 SWS in class and 2,5 ECTS of effort. Both parts taken together total 5 ECTS.

During Winter Semester 2014/15 only the first part will be taught.

The first part on the software industry covers:

  • Software products and projects

  • Markets and business models

  • Product management and engineering

  • Intellectual property

  • Software labor economics

The second part on FLOSS proper covers:

  • Open source software

  • Open source processes

The course combines weekly lectures with homework. Homework typically involves reading materials and summarizing these readings in short one-page documents.
