OSS-NYT (Nailing your Thesis)

Inhalt

This course teaches you how to perform research. According to most Prüfungsordnungen your Bachelor or Master theses have to be scientific work, and this class teaches you how to do it. The class consists of a weekly lecture (2 SWS) with associated exercises (2 SWS), totaling 5 ECTS. If students pick up one of the offered research projects, total effort doubles to 10 ECTS.

The lecture part covers the following topics:

• What is science?

• The research process

• Exploratory research

• Confirmatory research

• Writing a thesis/paper

• The scientific community
  

The exercise associated with the lecture involves reading, writing, and evaluating weekly homework, but no research project.

Students can pick up a research project for an additional 5 ECTS. Students perform the research and write a (short) research paper.

Taken as lecture + exercises, student effort totals 5 ECTS. These 5 ECTS can be taken as a graded lecture + exercise (VL + UE) or as a 5 ECTS Schlüsselqualifikation (no grade). With additional 5 ECTS of research project work, NYT can be taken as a 10 ECTS course. In Informatik, these 10 ECTS can be booked as a Bachelor-Praktikum, Master-Projekt, or as a 10 ECTS Lecture + Exercise (VL + UE).

Weiteres

Prof. Riehle is on sabbatical during WS 2013/14. Thus, a large chunk of the sessions will be conducted online using Adobe Connect. Students can come to a traditional classroom or tune in from elsewhere, for example, from home (at their own risk). Please come to the first session to learn how we will handle this.
