The Cluster "Engineering of Advanced Materials" (EAM) at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg is part of the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal and State Governments with the research topic "Hierachical Structure Formation of Functional Devices".

Forschungsschwerpunkte

Advanced materials with properties tailored on the molecular and mesoscales are expected to stimulate evolutionary advances and revolutionary breakthroughs in emerging key technology areas such as information and communication as well as catalysis, energy, and transportation. Hence, the ability to design novel materials and processes will have a strong impact on assuring industrial competitiveness, economic growth and a better quality of life. Based on the unique combination of the top-ranked Engineering and Natural Science Faculties at the FAU, the scientific concept of the proposed CE focuses on the science and engineering of hierarchical materials organised from the molecular to the macroscopic levels. Bridging the gap between materials design at the molecular level and macroscopic component and system engineering requires the development of adequate approaches capable of covering an extensive range of time and length scales in modelling and simulation, processing and manufacturing, as well as structure, property and process analytics. Based on a coherent methodological approach selected priority areas of research will be explored, including
engineering of nanoelectronic materials, engineering of photonic and optic materials, engineering of catalytic materials, engineering of lightweight materials.
Demonstrators will be developed in these research areas in close cooperation with external academic and industrial partners integrated in the CE. The vision of the CE is to bridge the gap between fundamental research and real-world applications of modern high-performance materials in key scientific and engineering areas.
