- Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches
- Das HS Literature gehört in folgenden Studiengängen jeweils zu folgenden Modulen:
MA North American Studies - Culture and Literature: Aufbaumodul Literary Studies MA North American Studies - Culture and Literature: Vertiefungsmodul Literary Studies MA Literaturstudien – intermedial und interkulturell: Module 4,5,7 und 8 BA English and American Studies: Hauptmodul A Literature. (Zulassungsvoraussetzung: Zwischenmodul II) Für BA-Studierende ist an diesen Kurs auch eine "Independent Study Group" angeschlossen. Lehramt Englisch an Gymnasien (neu): Hauptmodul L-GYM Literature. (Zulassungsvoraussetzung: Zwischenmodul Literature) Alte Studiengänge (Studienbeginn vor WS 07/08): Hauptstudium. (Zulassungsvoraussetzung: Zwischenprüfung)
- Inhalt
- What are the functions of literary representation? What is the status of fiction and aesthetic experience? How do created worlds relate to social realities? And why do we read in the first place? Questions like these are fundamental to any literary analysis, but they are seldom explicitly addressed. The class will discuss the diverse motives, effects and values of why we read in relation to American novels from the past five years. Course reading will include texts by Don DeLillo, Toni Morrison, Stewart O’Nan (who will give a reading in Erlangen on June 1), Richard Powers, and either Paul Auster, Thomas Pynchon, Philip Roth, or Gary Steyngart, depending on student preferences.
Student expert teams will be responsible for the discussion of the novels as well as preparatory theoretical material. In order to receive credit for the course, a final 20-page paper is due by noontime, October 15.

- Please purchase: Stewart O’Nan, The Odds (2012), Toni Morrison, A Mercy (2008), Richard Powers, Generosity (2009), Don DeLillo, Point Omega (2010).
To enable informed discussions, students are required to read the first three novels listed above as well as the introduction to Rita Felski’s 2008 study The Uses of Literature before the beginning of the semester. Students are required to join the class on StudOn, where Rita Felski’s text and additional materials will be made available.
