Contents
he dialects of England show a great amount of both phonological and structural variation, far more so than dialects of English in other parts of the world (e.g. Kortmann & Langstrof 2017: 122). In this seminar, we will explore regional variation of English in England. Participants will become familiar with regional differences in pronunciation (such as the /foot-strut/-split), morphology (e.g. /hisself/), syntax (e.g. /Give it me/), and vocabulary (such as /tea/ or /dinner/ for the evening meal). We will learn about historical and recent developments, including supra-regionalization and the spread of 'Estuary English'. We will also look into topics such as enregisterment and language attitudes.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, the class will take place online, using Zoom and StudOn.

This class is also useful for students preparing for B.1 "Variation und Wandel" in the Staatsexamen L-Gym (Present-Day English).
