Prerequisites / Organisational information
This class is part of the following module:
  • Lehramt Englisch an Gymnasien: Optionsmodul Linguistics (2 SWS Lektürekurs diachron)

Prerequisite: sprachhistorisches Seminar (in Zwischenmodul L-Gym Linguistics; ideally Old or Middle English)

Course requirements: Submit at least 3 homeworks during the course or a longer translation after the course.

Contents
The reading course is aimed at students who want to improve their knowledge of Old and Middle English and/or who are interested in or preparing for the Old or Middle English assignment in the Staatsexamen Englische Sprachwissenschaft (Lehramt Gymnasien).
In this course we will read larger parts of the Old and Middle English canon texts relevant for the state examination, translate into German and discuss the linguistic-historical peculiarities that occur in them. This will give you more familiarity with previous language levels and practice in translation and can deepen your knowledge in basic linguistic-historical topics. The focus of the text selection this semester is based on literary links between Medieval England and the wider world, so we will also focus on genre-typical and cultural-historical characteristics.

The course is very labour-intensive due to the longer texts that have to be prepared for each session.

The course takes place every Thursday 12:15 - 13:45, with Old and Middle English groups meeting in alternate weeks.
