Contents
During the early Upper Palaeolithic, the Anatomically Modern Humans arrived and populated Europe. Approximately 30,000 years ago before present, this settlement reached all the habitable regions of the continent. Throughout the following millennia, the human groups flourished under the umbrella of a cultural system that has revealed distinctive and common expressions in remote areas (from the Urals, to the western Pyrenean region, for example), but also singular regional variations. For this reason, this cultural system, the Gravettian, has been considered a mosaic of pan-European scale. In this seminar we will talk and debate about some of these key expressions, such as the lithic and osseous industries, the art and symbolic world (Venus figurines, hand stencils, etc.) and the funerary practices, as well as the paleobiology and genetics of the human groups behind the Gravettian.
