- The sharp rise in the use of new technologies and social media has triggered a debate about the possible effects on the political architecture. Is social media leading to increased political participation in East Asia? Can social media boost democratization in authoritarian states in the region? This seminar revisits the debate about the utility of social media in both authoritarian and democratic states in the region. After visiting the general debate about social media and media, we will look at several case studies to highlight the diverse effects of these new technologies.
