- Inhalt
- Self-help books such as "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" or "The Rules" are frequently featured on bestseller lists and constitute an integral part of our society. In this seminar we will trace the development of advice manuals throughout history and look at the specific subject positions that are constructed by the texts. Furthermore, we will see how these confirm or subvert contemporary discourses on gender, class and the nation. Finally, we will examine the current status of self-help literature by analysing its representation and function in contemporary fiction.Required reading: Helen Fielding, "Bridet Jones: The Edge of Reason"Further texts will be supplied at the beginning of the semester.
